- In order to build on and check the findings of previous scholars, the research involved identifying and analysing relevant passages from an extensive body of ancient Buddhist texts in Pali, Sanskrit and Chinese (equivalent to approximately 10,000 pages), some of which remain untranslated into a European language. Although these are available as searchable digital texts, the use of different Chinese characters to translate the same Indian term makes searching particularly complex. The search identified over 150 passages (each of several pages) requiring comparative analysis. Data collection and analysis was carried out over several years.
