- Double-weighted statement
- The book is 150,000 words long and represents the culmination of five years of research and writing. It required the location and examination of over 100 obscure or forgotten film texts, as well as better-known ones, and the study of numerous periodicals in a variety of foreign libraries. The book analyses the Italian star system in a variety of contexts including that of the film industry, the historical one of war, civil war and their aftermaths, and the political one of postwar reconstruction and its preoccupations. It brings a completely new perspective to the rich literature on Italian neorealism.
