- The Routledge History of Monarchy features an extensive and wide-ranging collection of thirty-seven case studies on all aspects of royal studies from ancient Egypt to present-day Asia. Dr Elena Woodacre is the primary editor of this work and coordinated every element of the project. She was approached by the publisher about editing a volume for the Routledge Histories on monarchy series as the founder of the Royal Studies Network and the Kings and Queens conference series. A key element of her role as primary editor was to act as the sole liaison with the publisher from that initial contact, through the proposal, review and production processes. Woodacre was responsible for recruiting, selecting and coordinating a team of four section editors plus forty contributors. She orchestrated all of the elements of the collection, from the selection of key themes, ensuring balance and continuity between all four sections, dealing with contributors who either left the project or were added at a later stage to enhance particular sections and ensuring that the project was successfully completed in a timely fashion. She also oversaw the creation of a supplementary companion website, working closely with the publishers and two sub-editors to produce this important resource for scholars and students and continues to collaborate with the website team to produce regular updates to enhance its utility and timeliness (https://routledgetextbooks.com/textbooks/9781138703322/ ).
Dr Woodacre’s written contribution to the collection “Understanding the Mechanisms of Monarchy” sits apart at the beginning of the volume as a theoretical piece which considers key aspects on monarchy in a global, longue durée sense rather than introducing the contents of the collection. Instead, each section has its own introductory piece, written by each section editor which draws the contributions in each section together in connection with the section’s theme.
