- This paper significantly develops and generalises an award-winning ICAPS paper https://www.aaai.org/ocs/index.php/ICAPS/ICAPS13/paper/view/6047. The generalisations of the original ideas (connecting an external solver to a planner) are coupled with a rigorous underpinning theoretical framework, introducing the concept of “TIF-grounded goals” – a form of intermediate goal in a plan. The innovations allow external solvers to be exploited in a wider range of problems than the earlier work, illustrated with multiple domains. The work has been exploited in the applications of planning developed with Schlumberger (see ICS1), where an external solver modelling certain drilling phenomena has been coupled with planning for automated drilling.
