- This is a game changer in the field as it explains how off-stoichiometry is accommodated at amorphous grain boundaries in polycrystalline urania fuel. This publication, and the experimental work that resulted from the investigation, highlighted a range of new mechanistic behaviour relevant to industrial production and operation of fuels led to a National Nuclear User Facility proposal (EP/V035223/1) submitted to improve the mechanistic understanding of fuel manufacture (£850k). A PhD devoted to fuel modelling has been funded due to this (£110k from Westinghouse) and funding to understand related corrosion effects in fast-reactors is funded through BEIS sponsored NNL’s AFCP (£150k).
