- ‘The Censorship of British Drama 1900-1968 Vol. 4’ is a full length monograph (over 100,000 words) centred on extensive primary research undertaken in two archives held at the British Library (Manuscripts Collections) - The Lord Chamberlain’s Correspondence Files and the Lord Chamberlain’s Licensed and Unlicensed Plays. The former contains individual files (many of them very substantial) for each play submitted for public performance during the relevant period (typically around 1,000 per year), and it was necessary to examine and read these in their entirety.
