Borders, Raindrops (Granice kiše) (2018) is a feature-length fiction
film set on the borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and
Montenegro. Co-written and co-directed with fellow film researcher
Nikola Mijovic (University of the Arts, London) and produced by Sudar,
the film tells the story of the post-war traumas that erupted in the new
countries that succeeded Yugoslavia’s break-up, focusing on life on the
recently established borders.

- Borders, Raindrops (Granice kiše) (2018) is a feature-length fiction film set on the borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Montenegro. Co-written and co-directed with fellow film researcher Nikola Mijovic (University of the Arts, London) and produced by Sudar, the film tells the story of the post-war traumas that erupted in the new countries that succeeded Yugoslavia’s break-up, focusing on life on the recently established borders.
The film is a result of Sudar’s ongoing research into the representation of the Balkans in arts, media, and especially film, through which he wanted to examine the possibilities of questioning and re-inventing representations of a space and its people. Borders, Raindrops (2018) seeks to challenge the established notion of the Balkans, both in terms of its content and aesthetic style, as well as the stereotypical focus on conflict and problematic representations of ethnicity and gender in existing films about the region.
The film is structured as three stories. Sudar directed the second storyset in Bosnia and Herzegovina and an epilogue set in Croatia, and was closely involved in the completion of the first story in Montenegro. Sudarconducted a series of primary and secondary research methods over an eight-year period, including site visits, interviews and collaboration with local inhabitants, as well as a literature and film review.
The film was co-funded by government and cultural organisations in five countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Sweden and the UK. Sudar is also the film’s festival agent, organising its promotion and dissemination. It premiered at the 2018 Sarajevo Film Festival, 10–17 August 2018, and has won 13 awards and been screened at 30 festivals internationally, including Canada, US, UK, Sweden, Germany, France, Italy, Russia, Bulgaria and ex-Yugoslav countries such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia.
