- English abstract
- The essay discusses how best to approach translating Proust’s major work, À la recherche du temps perdu, into English, using the case study of the street cries of Paris which appear in vol. 6. The essay addresses the central issue of translation: fidelity vs equivalence, and examines the pitfalls of current English translations available in print. The essay proposes a return to the policy of the first translator of À la recherche, Charles Scott Moncrieff (1927), who in his version left the street cries in the original French.
