- Those with a stake in Engineering and Product Design Education annually share their peer-reviewed research. The Design Society provides a leading role and insures an international perspective. It is:
..an interdisciplinary community of academics and industry practitioners with the goal of developing and promoting a robust, usable and scalable means of designing complex solutions that a sustainable and globalised society needs to thrive, in the 21st century. We see the development of Design Science, through design research, design teaching and design practice, as the enabler for maturing novel technologies into innovative solutions, as well as a way to engage diverse people in articulating their needs and challenges and to participate and even lead the creation of appropriate solutions. Our aim is to develop the innovative means that support designers in their practice. At the same time, we support the exchange of best practices to improve the routine design and conduct research to develop and maintain solid theoretical foundations of design. (Design Society, 2020)
Practice makes Perfect showcases experience and value of a variety collaborative design research projects between Northampton University, industry and the wider community. In the last decade Design Thinking has provided an opportunity for people outside the design field to learn from design practice. Design Managers are increasingly drawn from the social sciences. Non-design businesses are using the design methodologies to problem solve. Practice-based research and observation are methodological approaches shared by Social Sciences and Design Research The paper was written by a social scientist/historian who teaches on product design course and as a design manager in industry. Although, the engineering and product design profession is interdisciplinary, this analysis of the value of practice was seen as coming from an original viewpoint.
