- This is a religious biography of W. T. Stead (1849-1912), newspaper editor, author, social reformer, advocate for women rights, peace campaigner, and spiritualist. A contribution to OUP’s Spiritual Lives series, the monograph explores Stead’s conception of journalism as a modern pulpit for the English-speaking world. It represents over a decade of research, including extensive research among the three major newspapers Stead edited between 1871 and 1912, his own many writings, the large collection of Stead papers at Cambridge University and other manuscript collections, and the religious, political, social and cultural context in which he worked.
