- As one of Handel’s most successful operas of the 1730s, and the finest of his three Metastasio operas, this edition of Poro is a significant addition to the Hallische Händel Ausgabe. The edition replaces that of F.W. Chrysander (1880), which was based on a limited number of sources, lacked a critical report, and failed to establish the details of the later versions of the opera. This new edition is intended to rectify these deficiencies and to serve both scholarly and practical needs. This is the first critical edition of the work, and is based on a comprehensive study of all the surviving sources. The unusually extensive introduction contains much new material relating to:(i) the genesis of the libretto and its subsequent changes;(ii) the opera’s performance history, with its three differing London versions; and (iii) the numerous literary and musical sources. This is the first edition of Poro to present the unabridged original version of the work (February/March, 1731), followed by those versions with replacement arias and other changes for the revivals in November/December 1731 and December/January 1736/1737. It is now possible to perform any of the three London versions of the opera using the texts from this edition. The critical examination of the multiplicity of eighteenth-century sources, and the difficulties involved in unravelling their sometimes contradictory detail, was an exacting responsibility. This investigation concerned not only their contents and details, but also their physical nature, including an examination of: (i) the format and foliation of each source, to establish its structure and indicate any deletions or insertions; (ii) the rastra measurements, to indicate both conjunct and disjunct folios; (iii) the watermarks, to assist with the dating of the paper: and (iv) the identification of copyists within the recognised Handel nomenclature.
