- The first three volumes of The New Oxford Shakespeare containing all of Shakespeare’s plays and poems were published as a two-volume Critical Reference Edition (CRE) and a one-volume Modern Critical Edition (MCE). Loughnane edited ten plays and co-edited one further play across all three volumes, preparing original spelling editions for the CRE and modern spelling editions for the MCE. In total, he edited c. 220,000 of Shakespeare’s words and generated a further 180,000 words in original editorial materials consisting of extended textual introductions, textual notes, commentary, and notes on performance. Research took 5+ years.

- The first three volumes of The New Oxford Shakespeare contain all of Shakespeare’s plays and poems. They were published as a two-volume Critical Reference Edition (CRE) and a one-volume Modern Critical Edition (MCE).
Loughnane was Associate Editor of The New Oxford Shakespeare and edited ten of the forty-two plays attributed or partly attributed to Shakespeare in the edition. His solo-edited plays were: 2 Henry VI, Edward III, The Merchant of Venice, Henry V, Twelfth Night, All’s Well that Ends Well, Pericles, Prince of Tyre, Cymbeline, The Tempest, and The Two Noble Kinsmen. He also co-edited Titus Andronicus with four other members of the editorial team.
Loughnane’s ten solo-edited plays first appeared in the CRE. For each play he contributed an extended Textual Introduction and textual notes (substantive, incidental, lineation). Loughnane then modernized all ten plays for the MCE. For each play, he prepared and selected a bricolage of critical quotation (four pages for each play), a casting list, and original commentary and performance notes.
For the co-edited play he edited the play’s first act (one fifth of the play), preparing textual notes for the CRE and commentary and performance notes of the MCE.
