- This study is 150,000 words in length and includes 165 illustrations, the vast majority of which are published and attributed for the first time. It collates and analyses extensive previously unpublished sources and archives from around the world in order to present the first study of its subject in various cultural contexts, including the Austrian empire, Mexico, and Japan. In doing so numerous other photographers and artists are documented for the first time. This book investigates the specific historical contexts that informed the subject’s work and argues for the photographer’s broad significance as a cultural mediator in nineteenth-century Japan.
