- This paper was the first to use publicly available data derived from photos uploaded to Instagram to derive a solution for rapidly and accurately estimating the size of a crowd. Given the novelty of the research and the potential for application in emergency situations, the article received press coverage by a number of news outlets, e.g. Il Sole 24 Ore (https://www.ilsole24ore.com/art/instagram-foto-utili-dimensionare-folle-e-gestire-emergenze-ACmJd0M?refresh_ce=1) and Il Fatto Quotidiano (https://www.ilfattoquotidiano.it/2019/06/06/le-foto-di-instagram-possono-aiutare-a-calcolare-le-dimensioni-di-una-folla-e-gestire-meglio-le-emergenze/5236313/). Further work is going to explore how features of the urban environment may help us better estimate crowds of different sizes in different kinds of events.
