- Double-weighted statement
- This book represents six years of research, one of which was full-time supported by the Fulbright Foundation. That year of field-work in Nigeria generated more than 200 hours of interviews and filmed performances, upon which a third of the book is based. Further research required unique and limited availability materials spread over archives in eight libraries on three continents. Both the field and archival research took place, in part, in the Yorùbá language, which, as a lesser-taught language, required extensive travel and training to gain proficiency in. The manuscript length is considerably longer than two substantial academic articles.
