- Factual information about significance: The traditional measure of success for electroacoustically generated personal sound zones—SPL contrast—is not always perceptually relevant. This paper is the first to consider perceptual aspects of inter-zone interference. It establishes the importance of perceptual considerations and identifies the key perceptual attributes ("distraction" and "balance and blend"). The findings have subsequently been incorporated into sound zone studies by other researchers to increase the perceived quality and, consequently, commercial viability of sound zone systems. Additionally, the novel multi-stage perceptual profiling method that is employed has been adapted by others for studies in related areas.
