- This book draws on a critical review of 20 years of policy and research on vocational education and training in South Africa, much of it involving the two authors. It contrasts this existing research base with a longitudinal, interview -based study with vocational students in South Africa and an institutional case study. These allow the book to offer an original theorisation combining the capabilities approach and critical realism. It marks the first book length treatment in the emerging critical capabilities approach to vocational education and training.
