- We show that the heuristics used to design energy efficient industrial plants for >30 years can be re-derived using performance guarantees. Editor-in-chief (contact: FoEREF@ic.ac.uk) listed this paper as a semifinalist for the journal's 2018 Best Paper Award (top 10 out of >1K papers published in 2018). This work secured a job at Schlumberger Cambridge Research for PhD student Kouyialis. The paper led to a keynote at ESCAPE28 (https://www.tugraz.at/events/escape28/scientific-program/keynote-speakers/) and subsequently to an invited Computers & Chemical Engineering paper (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.compchemeng.2019.106599).
