- This first measurement of a proton-tagged photon-photon scattering process at the LHC was achieved using the newly commissioned ATLAS Forward Proton (AFP) Roman pot insertions to the beampipe 200 metres from the interaction point. Newman chaired internal reviews of the physics aims and technical readiness of AFP during its approval and installation. He also convened the AFP 'Combined Performance' group, which was charged with understanding and calibrating the response of the device to enable its use in physics analyses such as this. He worked directly on the alignment of the Roman pot stations for this paper.
