- The was the paper from an invited talk at the ECI conference on Nanomechanical testing in Materials Research and Development in Olhao, Portugal, October 6-11 (2013). The work develops a simple analytical approximation method for determining the elastic properties of thin coatings from nanoindentation tests on the coating/substrate system without the need for detailed finite element analysis. The technique is specifically useful because it can easily be adapted to multilayer and fictionally gradient coatings which cannot be analysed by more accurate methods and resulted in six further publications.
