- Stories from the She Punks is a documentary film consisting of talking head interviews backed by archive photos with 15 women who played instruments in British punk bands in the late 70s/early 1980s. It was co-directed by Gina Birch of the Raincoats. The film has been developed in an appropriately DIY fashion outside of the conventional film industry, and aims to let interviewees speak for themselves. The film allows musicians from the punk era to speak authentically, many for the first time, about their experiences in music at the time. The last section touches on the idea of legacies and hidden histories, eschewing the usual London-centric focus of punk to focus on stories from Manchester, Southampton, Birmingham, Cambridge and Newcastle.
The film follows the publication of Reddington’s book The lost women of rock music: female musicians of the punk era (2007/ 2012), and continues the book’s project to research and gain cultural recognition for the UK’s 1970s/early 80s punk women.
It was taken on by Doc'n'Roll Film Festival as part of their repertoire in 2018/2019 and has also been shown in Belfast and Los Angeles. The 'work in progress' screenings at The British Library and The Roundhouse in 2016 were part of the celebrations to mark the 40th anniversary of punk, and were both sell-out events, leading to an interview with Samira Ahmed on BBC Radio 4 and an article in The New Statesman. It was also featured on Talk Radio and BBC Radio London's Jo Goode's programme and in several influential blogs and podcasts including the following:
