- This biography is based on five years research collecting material in archives in Europe and North America. It uses Hughes’ expertise in exploring how cultural exchange shapes international relations to explore how a now neglected writer played an important role in moulding British images of Russia in the first half of the twentieth century. The depth of research and quality of the book has been acknowledged in reviews both in academic journals and non-academic journals including the TLS (‘a great service to scholarship’, ‘superb biography’, ‘richly detailed’).
