- In his role as co-editor of the volume, Dr Jones co-authored the introduction (pp.1-10) and contributed a chapter (pp.165-185), as well as devising the book’s structure and overseeing the preparation of the other contributions (ten further chapters, plus epilogue). He also organised and chaired a panel showcasing research from the book at the British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies Annual Conference 2017.
Dr Jones’s chapter, ‘“A Man in Love”: Intimacy and Political Celebrity in the Early Eighteenth Century’, ties together the various themes of the volume through its discussion of scandal’s political currency in Sir Robert Walpole’s Britain. The introduction likewise makes an important intervention in the field of celebrity studies, making the case for locating the birth of celebrity culture at an earlier date than had been posited by preceding studies. In inviting scholars to contribute to the volume, Dr Jones set out to include both established and early career researchers, allowing the book to reflect on the state of the field at the same time as it indicates exciting directions for future research.
