- This is a substantial 100,000-word monograph (246 pages), presenting six years of intensive research and writing and commensurate scope (in particular, it works across a range of methods drawn from literary studies, history and musicology). It involved a considerable amount of research in eight US and UK archives, including many months working with the British Library's rare books and manuscript holdings, as well as archival trips to the Bodleian Library and Queen's College Library, Oxford; Cambridge University Library; the Huntington Library (San Marino, California); the National Library of Scotland; National Archives of Scotland; and, Senate House Library, London.
