- 'The Silent Deep' is a highly detailed study of Britain's nuclear submarine service since 1945. At 864 pages, it is the product of an extensive period of research by its two authors (over six years). It is also multi-layered, being a history of policy-making and politics in British defence and foreign policies, cooperation with US governments, naval and nuclear technology and capability, and the roles of individuals at all levels. The book rests on a very considerable body of varied primary source material (some of which it is the first to access) and is exhaustive in its research.
