- Christopher Dingle’s edition of Messiaen’s _Un oiseau des arbres de Vie (oiseau Tui)_ realizes the orchestration for a previously unheard movement originally intended for the composer’s last completed orchestral work _Éclairs sur l’Au-Delà…_ (1987–91). Messiaen completed the movement in two- and three-stave score with some indications of the intended orchestration, but, at a relatively late stage, decided to omit the movement from the final work. While other pieces by Messiaen have emerged since his death in 1992, this is the only exemplar thus far of a previously unknown mature orchestral movement to be performed.
Working from the short score, Dingle’s orchestration supplements Messiaen’s annotations with extensive knowledge of the composer’s music from more than twenty-years of study. In particular, the score draws on Dingle’s unparalleled acquaintance with _Éclairs sur l’Au-Delà…_, from doctoral study to the substantial monograph _Messiaen’s Final Works_ (Ashgate, 2013). Wherever possible, the starting point for determining the voicing is a precedent elsewhere in Messiaen’s music. These were sought from music as close as possible to _Un oiseau des arbres de Vie (oiseau Tui)_, first in _Éclairs_, then neighbouring works and further back in Messiaen’s œuvre. In the critical edition, the score is supplemented by an extensive preface, editorial notes, a critical commentary and note for performers (c. 14,000 words in total).
_Un oiseau des arbres de Vie (oiseau Tui)_ was given its world premiere on 7th August 2015 by the BBC Philharmonic conducted by Nicholas Collon at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms. It was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, and subsequently by the BBC World Service and international radio stations. The work is published by Messiaen’s own publisher, Éditions Musicales Alphonse Leduc. The critical edition of the score is supplemented here by a recording of the premiere.
