- Contemporary Chinese Printmaking is the second in a series of three interconnected exhibitions and international print portfolio exchanges that Croft established between printmakers in Aberystwyth and Changsha. The exhibition showcased the work of over forty professional artists and art students, providing the first opportunity for members of the Hunan Printmakers Association to exhibit outside of China. Raising the international profile of a printmaking community that was hitherto unknown or unrecognised in the West, the project also demonstrated how innovation, ingenuity and craft can enrich contemporary print practice through networking, collaboration and entrepreneurship.
Part of an extended practice-as-research project, the touring exhibition, which was accompanied by a catalogue, served to examine the interrelationships between the technical, historical and cultural aspects of printmaking through the practice of three generations of Chinese printmakers from Hunan Province who, in their diverse practices, explore a wide range of traditional as well as non-traditional techniques and media. Presenting Chinese printmaking within international contexts, research for the exhibition also revealed similar processes, approaches and shared values.
Contemporary Chinese Printmaking yielded insights into philosophical concerns, poetic sensibilities, as well as artists’ engagement with history, folk art, spirituality and religion. Contemporary debates surrounding economic development, depopulation of the countryside, rapid growth of cities, and their implications for the environment and climate change were demonstrated to be majors concern for a younger generation of printmakers.
The project was developed in partnership with Changsha Normal University, Changsha Central South University, Hunan University of Science and Technology, and Hunan Artists Association. Facilitating a wider appreciation for and participation in contemporary print practices, the project promoted collaboration among artists through technical workshops and print portfolios as well as facilitating a dialogue between artists, historians and theorists by establishing international networks via conferences and curatorial projects.
