- Modernity and the English Rural Novel, a 95,000-word monograph, is the product of more than ten years of reading and new research. It aims to make a new statement about rural modernity by showing that the interwar rural novel embodies a rich form of response to modernity, and that its complex literary effects find echoes in prominent novels of the late twentieth, and early twenty-first centuries.
