- This was a large-scale project that took place over a number of years, developing ideas around representing the personal, the political, the social and the cultural, cohesively, in a series of music releases. Work began on music creation and lyric writing, while concurrently engaging in a range of debates, presentations and panel discussions, such as '5 Artists in Search of a Country' in which myself and a group of Scottish artists were asked to reflect on what role art and culture can and should play in the historic [independence] debate that took place in 2014.
The title of the central album, 'A Thing Brand New', is taken from the Loudon Wainwright song, 'Be Careful There's a Baby in the House' (1971), particularly the lyric:
Be careful there’s a baby in the house
And a baby will not be fooled
It’s a thing brand new, does what it wants to
‘Til you get it schooled
The overarching theme then became an exploration of the 'new', in the form of new beginnings, new perspectives, and new human beings being brought into the world, through the examination of contemporary and historical culture. This idea was used as a central ideal to be represented in a range of ways such as:
• A country reimagined
• Reflection on self, culture, society and reinvention
• Addressing issues through child-rearing of societal programming, conforming and conditioning
• Brand new humans (personally, the birth of my first child)
• A collection of new music
