- Double-weighted statement
- This novel is the culmination of three years’ creative inquiry into the complicated legacy a son inherits from his violent father. It was built from a mix of imaginative projection, fieldwork, and experiential research. The multivalent narrative is set within the mundane landscapes of my childhood: the A-roads of northern England, motorway service stations, dingy pubs and folk clubs. All the fine-grained details of these places serve as ghosts within my protagonist’s memory throughout; as such, the writing of the book required a deep-dive into my own memories, and the attentive reframing and heightening of personal experiences for dramatic effect.
