- This book was first published in September 2016 as a special issue of the journal Art History. The attributed individual was responsible for the initial conception of the topic and the choice of the co-editor. The attributed individual and co-editor planned, designed and edited the entire volume after the proposal was reviewed by the Art History editorial board and approved. The scholarly introduction of 8000 words was co-written equally by the co-editors. The attributed individual contributed a single authored chapter of 12,000 words and 7 essays were commissioned from an international cohort of scholars in the field, showcasing the work of early and mid-career scholars. The research-dense essays present new findings on the concepts and use of diverse materials in European art from 1945 to the present day. The coeditors provided detailed feedback and close edits on all the essays. The entire volume was anonymously and externally peer-reviewed. It appeared as a freestanding book in 2017.
