- As co-editor of this eleven-chapter volume, Tuffnell was the lead editor of 50% of the chapters and reviewed all chapters before submission. Chapter One, ‘Seeking a Global History of Gold’, for which Tuffnell’s contribution was 60%, is the product of original research in twelve archives (all of which Tuffnell worked in) and extensive critical reflection across the scholarship of gold rushes in 6 national historiographies, the global histories of empires in the United States, Africa, and the Pacific World, and the environmental histories of three of the world’s continents. Tuffnell was sole author of Chapter 10, ‘Engineering Gold Rushes: Engineers and the Mechanics of Global Connectivity’, the outcome of research in previously unused archives and manuscript collections in Britain and the United States and in the contemporary technical literature (journals, magazines, and books) of gold mining between 1848 and 1902 from the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, and South Africa. The collection is the result of five years’ international collaboration between Tuffnell, his co-editor, and contributors and makes a major intervention into the methods of global history, moving historians away from analysing global connectedness along a plane of increasing and decreasing “thickness” toward a model of complex entanglement.
