- The publication suffered a number of setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in the postponement of the original publication schedule. First, delays to the publication were incurred by the effects of the furlough scheme and the temporary closure of the BFI, under COVID-19 restrictions. Consequently, images for the book could not be sourced until the BFI archive offices, and those of related venue-based archives, reopened. Second, the author, a single mother, was required to homeschool her daughter. As a Spanish national, she had no access to a family support network, which affected the final stages of manuscript preparation.

- ‘Film Festivals’ is a 100,000-word monograph that makes a unique contribution to film exhibition scholarship and Hispanic Studies, examining the film festival as a site of transnational exchange located within the globalized networks of contemporary cinema. Informed by over a decade of sustained research, the book employs a detailed comparative case-study methodology to show how film festivals act as sites of cinematic, artistic, social, political and economic exchange between global north and south. It adds significant critical insight by drawing on rigorously researched insider knowledge and the wide-ranging perspectives of organizers, funders, filmmakers, critics and programmers.
