- Footsoldiers emerged from an ESRC-funded six-year research project aimed at making a comparative and British contribution–published as a reasonably-priced paperback, a contribution that reached both lay and academic audiences. It involved the design, fielding and quantitative analysis of three rounds of simultaneous survey research on six political parties (including surveys specifically targeted at Labour, Conservatives and lapsed members of all parties); it entailed twenty-five intensive (often hard-to-secure) interviews with parliamentary elites and HQ staffers (to capture the demand and the supply side of membership) and intensive analysis of those organisations' often highly complex (and ever-changing) rule books and constitutions.
