- The first paper that discovers air-gap field modulation and subsequent magnetic gearing effect in fractional-slot concentrated-winding permanent magnet synchronous machines. Using finite element modelling and experiments, it confirms that air-gap field modulation and magnetic gearing effect can make a significant contribution to torque enhancement when a large slot opening stator is used, particularly when pole number is close to or larger than slot number. This led to £764k EPSRC Prosperity Partnership-A New Partnership in Offshore Wind, EP/R004900/1, Work-Package1 for direct-drive wind power generators, and £120k Protean Electric Ltd (contact: Commercial Department Advisor) directly funded project on electric vehicle hub motors.
