- The book provides a complete study of Alfonso Vagnone S.J.’s (1568 – 1640) treatise, Tongyou Jiaoyu 童幼教育 (On the Education of Children), alongside its first annotated translation in the English language. It investigates the role of Vagnone’s text in the introduction of Renaissance pedagogy into late Ming China along with its lexical impact. In order to ascertain the sources and fortune of the treatise, the study draws from a corpus of rare materials, such as Renaissance treatises in Latin, Spanish and Italian, archival correspondence in Portuguese and 12-17th century moral publications in Chinese.
