- This 284-page monograph, based on new research in French and British sources, re-examines in technical detail a highly complex and prolonged military operation. It assesses numerous critiques of the British conduct of sieges during the Peninsular War, the shifting significance of San Sebastian during 1813, the Royal Navy’s role in operations, the controversial sacking and destruction of the town, and wider issues concerning violence in urban fighting. Assessing the siege in a broad context, it makes an original and highly significant contribution to our understanding of the neglected role of siege warfare during the Napoleonic Wars.
