- Charlton was Spokesperson - i.e. the international PI - of the ATLAS Collaboration for four years 2013-17, during which time he was ultimately responsible for the operation of the detector and for the scientific programme pursued by the collaboration. In this spokesperson role, he oversaw the set-up of the trigger for this channel, the data collection, and most of the analysis performed. Work to ensure that the trigger would suffice was done by members of the Birmingham group under his guidance. He was also involved in the review of the analysis at the approval stage.
