- This paper provided theoretical proof of findings contrary to common-sense expectation. In particular, it was proved that under certain circumstances, the degree of freedom for the design of the mask coefficients can be as low as one – down from the standard N, where N is the length of the discrete signal. The above fact allows for a simple analytical globally optimal solution, saving precious computational time and resources. It was demonstrated rigorously how the design of the mask could be formulated as an unconstrained optimisation problem, as opposed to the previously followed – more complicated – constrained optimisation approaches.
