- This book is based on 18 months of continuous fieldwork on the Hooghly, and shorter trips in subsequent years. It involved intensive and in-depth ethnographic research and participant observation at four key sites including the docks, a bureaucratic office, a shipyard, and with boatmen and river pilots on their vessels. Further research was carried out in workers' neighbourhoods and communities. Primary archival work was done in the Kolkata Port Trust archive covering 1950-2008. ESRC-funded, it was written during 2009-10.
