'Materially Measured': Fabric: Touch and Identity. ‘Materially Measured’ is a site-specific sculptural installation, the proposal for which was selected following an invite by the curators Professor Lesley Millar and Professor Alice Kettle. The work was created for the group exhibition Fabric: Touch and Identity at Compton Verney, Warwickshire (14.3.20 - 5.11.20/extended to 17.1.21), which developed from a three year research project ‘The Erotic Cloth’ undertaken by Millar and Kettle, the first outcome of which was the book The Erotic Cloth published by Bloomsbury 2018. The exhibition expands the research beyond the specific focus of the erotic to a broader consideration of the ways in which the qualities of cloth seduce, conceal, and reveal, through the various prisms of art, design, film and dance. Artists include Vivienne Westwood, Alice Kettle, Alison Watt, Cathy de Monchaux, Liz Rideal, Dorothea Tanning and Reiko Sudo. The work consists of a timber-constructed, floating shelf-like structure fixed to the wall at waist height. The timber shelf-like structure wraps around the edge of a constructed dividing partition wall in the gallery, which I upholstered in a grey felted wool cloth.
