- This paper focuses on a new design for a variable stiffness probe for use in the context of soft tissue palpation to demonstrate the role of active perception in robotic palpation diagnosis for detecting and classifying abnormalities in organs. This study constitutes an important first step in understanding sensory motor coordination and morphological computation of the body in haptic perception in the contest of the EPSRC project MOTION - Morphological Computation of Perception and Action (EP/N029003/1). The results of this paper have been exploited in subsequent submitted journal papers on robotic haptic perception (10.1109/RoboSoft48309.2020.9115971, 10.1371/journal.pone.0237379, 10.1007/s10514-020-09931-y, 10.17863/CAM.60539)
