- This article examines the fiction of Birmingham-based novelist Catherine Hutton (1756–1846) in relation to her frequent visits to Wales. The experiences recorded in her travel journals provided material for her later novels, where Welsh landscapes and culture are often figured as spaces of possibility and freedom for women, and are used to critique the constraints of contemporary urban society. Of around 1200 written tours of Wales in the period 1700-1900 some 200 were written by women, yet of these only 20 were published during or soon after their lifetimes. The four tours by Hutton (ca 45,000 words) edited and published here for the first time on Curious Travellers Digital Editions fulfil a project aim to bring the voices of women travellers back into the study of Romantic-era travel writing. Observant, witty, and thoughtful, they form an important new addition to the genre of the Welsh tour, and underpin the feminist analysis of the submitted article.
