- This is the first Western language monograph on an extremely popular local deity. The author has reanalysed a rich body of known sources, but also found plentiful new sources (anecdotes, diaries, inscriptions, Christian sources and a rich body of local gazetteers and revealed scriptures). An important methodological contribution is the detailed analysis of the precise dates of the spread of the cult. Moreover, he has pointed out the absolute importance of oral culture, which has already raised the ire of more traditional scholars dealing with written vernacular literature and its supposed dominant influence on the spread of Guan Yu worship.
