- This paper introduced a novel tool design concept which solved the long-standing problem of heat transfer and friction for hot stamping and cold-die quenching. The results have led to a new material characterisation technique (Patent: WO2017025730A1) under hot stamping conditions. An Impact Acceleration Grant (£140k) has been awarded to speed-up the industrial development of the concept. The paper also helped Lin to obtain a TATA Steel/RAEng Research Chair in Multidisciplinary Studies of Hot Stamping (£740k). The work in the paper was given as a Plenary Lecture at the 12th International Conference on the Technology of Plasticity, Cambridge, 2017.
