- Initially presented as a paper at the conference ‘Art and/or Design? Crossing Borders’ held at the State Academy of Arts and Design, Stuttgart, this book chapter charts the development in both practice and theory, of the notion of ‘designart’, a term coined by Coles in 2002 and expanded on in his book DesignArt (Tate Publishing, 2005), to the transdisciplinary, explored in his book The Transdisciplinary Studio (Sternberg Press, 2012).
To begin with, the essay tracks the various stages in the development of the debate to date, including an account of Coles’ own role in this, and then proceeds to identify a more open field of exploration beyond the deadlock of the binary question – ‘is it design or is it art?’ - underpinning contemporary accounts of the subject.
In the book Art and/or Design? Crossing Borders the term ‘designart’ actively contributes to the debate about the dividing line between liberal and applied art. Other contributors to the volume (bilingual English/German) include: Katia Baudin, Christine Hill, El Ultimo Grito, Louise Schouwenberg, Wolfgang Ullrich and Annett Zinsmeister. The insights of this chapter were further disseminated at a keynote speech at University College London in 2018.
