- <29> This modelling work provides a mechanistic account that bridges decision uncertainty and change-of-mind, and was subsequently validated by other experimental data including mental health disorders (doi:10.1371/journal.pcbi.1007149; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-16278-6; doi: 10.1101/2020.09.25.313619). The work has led to several invited talks, a £500k research grant by the US-Ireland R&D Partnership Programme (HSC R&D (STL/5540/19) and UKRI MRC (MC_PC_20020)), and several press coverages (e.g. https://www.irishtimes.com/sponsored/ulster-university/new-research-takes-another-step-towards-self-aware-artificial-intelligence-1.4019822 ; https://www.londonderrychamber.co.uk/chamber-news/members-news/ulster-university-researchers-develop-neural-computational-model-of-decision-uncertainty-and-change-of-mind/ ; https://www.rte.ie/brainstorm/2019/0703/1059940-could-machines-become-self-aware/ ; https://syncni.com/article/2645/ulster-university-ai-researchers-take-a-step-toward-self-aware-computers). The work led to the first author being awarded the Convocation Postgraduate Student of the Year, 2018, Faculty Best PhD Thesis, Faculty Computer Science and Informatics Best PhD Thesis and Best Research Paper.
