- This book presents a holistic, cross-disciplinary and cross-sectoral overview of design approaches to facilitate behavioural change in a range of problematic social and environmental issues. It provides the first systematic overview of the field of design for behaviour change. Design for behaviour change has been recognised as a term since 2005, but there still is a need for understanding its implementation, especially through private and public sectors. Previous approaches on this topic have been mainly from behavioural economics, favouring a paternalistic approach, whereas this book offers a holistic discussion of the topic including individualistic and contextual perspectives. The research for this volume resulted from an AHRC design development grant in 2014 (AH/L013525/1, £49,072). The work was published in a conference paper (2014) and summary and full reports (2014), leading to this first book publication on the topic. The research was led by Niedderer who brought together an international team of key players for the project. Niedderer also was the lead editor for this volume, being a co/author to the 8 introductory and concluding chapters, and two other chapters. The volume provides an overview of existing design models that integrate theories of change from differing scientific backgrounds, followed by an overview of the application of key design for behaviour change approaches in case studies across 5 different sectors, including design for health and wellbeing, sustainability, safety, design against crime and social design. The two main parts are framed by two introductory chapters, a discussion and conclusion chapter to set the scene and finally draw out key issues of design for behaviour change, including strengths and weaknesses as well as future opportunities. The work has been recognised by local councils in relation to their sustainability policy and practice, and a Chinese edition of the volume is in progress.
