- The result of a three-year period of doctoral studies and a one-year funded research fellowship, this monograph (186pp) presents a sustained enquiry in the philosophy of the social sciences. It focuses on foundational questions for sociological understanding, challenging core assumptions within critical social theory and other forms of sociological ‘realism’, flagging up their unfortunate consequences for investigative methodologies. The book brings back on to the theoretical agenda neglected insights from Wittgenstein, Ryle, Austin and other ‘ordinary language’ and ‘micro-sociological’ currents.
