- This article analyses how objective design research within the Geddes design office was combined with subjective design decisions to create practical and visionary products. It significantly diverges from Maffei’s book, Norman Bel Geddes: American Design Visionary, in its emphasis on the role of subjectivity in design and the practice of subjectivity in design history. Maffei was invited to contribute to the Special Issue It’s Personal: Subjectivity in Design History, which recognised and investigated the subjective nature of design historical endeavour. Design and Culture is double-blind peer reviewed journal reflecting current scholarship in the field of design.
